Tucked away in the corner of 12th Ave and Main, you’ll find Body Politic, a crisp and vibrant clothing store that wants you to be eco without being frumpy. Owner Nicole Oseen hopes to dress the environmentally friendly fashionista wanting to help preserve the planet, one Bahar Shahpar item at a time. Her philosophy is simple: Promote North American labels that take pride in creating fashion forward and sustainable clothing that is well made with good intentions. The store boasts a selection of designers including local favourite Elroy, California-based Modaspia, and Chicago-based Lara Miller.
One of the first things I noticed about the store was that the clothing racks were handmade from pipes and pipe fittings. Genius! The concrete on the back wall of this modern space along with antique furniture and fixtures, creates a contrast and invites your eyes to take a closer look. It surprised me when Nicole told me that the store formally known as drywall-concrete, took just 11 days to finish.
I asked Nicole if she’s sweating the big R(ecession) and without a flinch she replied ” I feel like I’m in a very good position. People are reevaluating the choices they make as consumers and what sort of impact it’s having. Although you’ll end up spending a bit more money at a store like this, it’ll last you longer and you know where it’s coming from”.
She also had some advice for young entrepreneurs looking to take the next step. “Make sure you have a passion for it because there will be times when things get really tough and you have to be ready and willing to get through it and see the bigger picture and remember why you’re doing it all in the first place”.
And if you’re interested in showing your line of clothing and accessories, Nicole points out a few things she looks for- unique pieces, beautiful fabrics, and a shared philosophy with the designer.
