They don’t teach you this in Art class.   Paper+  Couture seem like an unlikely duo but artists Alexandra Zaharova and Ilya Plotnikov work their magic to produce an unconventional spread.

Lately I’ve been drawn to geometric art and have been inspired by the relationship of corresponding shapes and colours.   Although I wasn’t exactly a top student when it came to geometry in school, I find it fascinating and soothing.  Being one of the oldest sciences,  geometry is considred the DNA of Design.

Sacred Geometry is used in the design of sacred architecture and sacred art.  The basic belief is that mathematical ratios and geometry, harmonics, and proportion are found in music, light, nature, and cosmology.  Sacred Geometry was the foundation to building sacred structures such as temples, monuments, mosques, churches, and altars among other structures.

Here’s a look at the work of designer Andy Gilmore, a New York based designer and musician whose colourful pieces take on a kaleidoscopic and geometric style.  His love and practice of music can be seen in his work as he represents the physics of sound acoustics.

Meet Petra Hogstrom.  A graduate of Swedish School of Textiles, and a previous contender in the Mercedes Benz Young Fashion Industry Award , this woman knows a thing or two about evoking the imagination when it comes to how we dress.  Her pieces are fiercely independent and rooted in unconventional sophistication and charm.  Using contrasting materials such as glass and silk, Petra represents the dichotomy that presents itself in every day life through her collection.

Without further adieu…

This is a great article I stumbled upon on the Digital Photography School blog that takes you through steps of successfully preparing for and shooting for an editorial spread.  London based Fashion Photographer Joaquim Barreto discusses the process of how to do a fashion photography editorial spread and breaks it down into digestible pieces.

It’s a great resource for anyone who would like to get a better grasp on the necessary steps.  You can read the article here.

Charlie Le Mindu, the 23 year old designer known most recently for adding to Lady Gaga’s costume extremity, creates towering wigs as well as clothes and accessories out of human hair.  A native of Bordeaux France, Le Mindu’s background is as surreal as his avant-garde pieces.  He started cutting hair at the age of 13 in his grandmother’s hair salon and later moved to Berlin at the age of 17 where he worked in punk hair salon called Le Petit Salon.  He later set up shop at club Rio unconventionally cutting hair of local club goers from 11 pm to 6 am.

Le Mindu is known for being the only designer at a major Fashion Week event with a show focused entirely on wigs.  What happens to the wigs after the show?  They are kept in a showroom so that stylists can borrow them.  You can see 3 of Le Mindu’s wigs in Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance Video”.

London based Fashion and Beauty Photographer Ian Crawford makes a splash (sorry guys, I had to!) in his brazenly beautiful paint and powder Photoshoot which capsulates his subjects in a cocoon of colour and downright fierceness.

Ian’s client lists boasts beauty giants like Lancome, Max Factor, The Body Shop, and Givenchy among others.  Paint has never looked so good on.

Mariya Sabotinova showcases a visual narrative of young woman’s “conversation with God” in this enchanting set that is thought provoking yet sober.  The setting and styling are classically coordinated leaving room to digest the seemingly euphoric state the character is in.  And it leaves me to wonder, is this a conversation with God or just a converstation with herself?

You know how it goes:  You don’t have a second chance to make a great first impression and this can’t be anymore true for brands in the online realm.  I’ve compiled a showcase off 12 fashion brands that in my opinion, have gone beyond the ordinary confines of website design, and have created dynamically intriguing and captivating websites.   The products are presented in a fun and interactive manner, allowing the visitor to engage with the site and it’s content.

If you have any fashion related websites that you love, please share!

We wrapped up a couple of more custom portfolio cases for 2 design students this past weekend and I’ve included photos below.  Unfortunately I didn’t have time to take some decent photos as they had to be shipped right away so these photos have been taken just before they were sent in the packing room!  The first portfolio case is an 11×17 black acrylic + mirrored acrylic and the second portfolio case is a white acrylic + name engraving.

Both portfolio cases are hinged with screwposts and include extenders so that you can include extra work in the case.  For more information about custom portfolios you can see our FAQ or contact tarlan[at]kloagency.com.

Recently we finished another custom art portfolio case for a designer who wanted to brand her work and portfolio with her signature look.  We worked with white acrylic and mirrored plexiglass to create this look.   This portfolio case was a lot of fun to create since we got to try out some new techniques that worked to our advantage.

The portfolio case is hinged with screwposts + extenders so that a larger amount of work can be put in at any one time. To see other portfolio’s we’ve done you can look here, here, here, and  here!  If you’d like your very own spiffy case, feel free to contact me
